4.1.1 Operating Systems
Learn about what operating systems are and what they do.
Without an operating system, programs could only run one at a time, and that program would have to be programmed to communicate directly with the system's resources. In other words, computers are basically useless without the operating system.
The job of all operating systems is to provide a platform to run applications on top of the system hardware.
Most operating systems provide a GUI for the user to interact with, making it easy for the user to use the computer without having to use CMD prompts for each task.

Compatibility & End of Life
Software developers often create different versions of their program/application for each mainstream OS. In most cases, when a developer chooses to announce the end-of-life for their program, it's often because the OS has updated to a new version that mostly breaks all their code.
When purchasing software, check for whether or not it'll be compatible and maintained for the operating system you're using.
