3.9.4 CPU Sockets
Learn the different types of CPU sockets installed on motherboards.
Land Grid Array
LGA moves the connecting pins from the processor package to the socket. Conducting pads on the bottom of the processor contact the protruding pins from the processor socket.
Pin Grid Array
PGA processors have a series of pins in an array on the underside of the processor package. The pins insert into corresponding receptacles within the processor socket on the motherboard.
Zero Insertion Force
An evolution of PGA. The pins are carried by the microprocessor and insert into the socket connectors. A lever acts as a safety device, so no force is exerted when installing or removing the processor.
Ball Grid Array (nah uh)
Technically not a socket since the microprocessors are permanently mounted into the socket. Copper balls are soldered directly to the motherboard, so it's impossible to upgrade or replace the microprocessor. Used in mobile devices like laptops, phones, memory chips.
