2.5.1 Maintenance Practices
Learn methods to maintain PC equipment in order to extend component life expectancy.
Create a Proper Environment
- keep the temperature at 70-74 degrees Fahrenheit
- keep the humidity levels at 40-70%
- ensure that computer rooms have separate and redundant cooling systems
- use a positive pressure system in computer rooms
- frequently clean systems that operate in dirty, smoky, or dusty environments
Electromagnetic-Interference
- use shielded cables
- run your cabling in conduits
Radio-Frequency-Interference
- try moving to a wireless operation that works in 5 GHz (gigahertz)
Magnetic-Interference
Any data stored on magnetic data, like CD & DVD Drives or tape recordings is at risk of corruption from any source of a magnetic field:
- speakers
- motors
- fans
- space heaters (shocking) Try moving to a:
- solid state drive
- USB flash drive
Cleaning Computers
Maintain Idle Computers
- after receiving a shipped system:
- let the unpackaged system sit at room temperature for ~6 hours, to allow condensation to evaporate
- use covers and cases to protect equipment that's not in use
- use cable ties and anchors to keep cabling organized
- regularly perform backups of important data
- make sure that the airflow is going the right way.
- if internal fans are installed backwards, it can negate the cool airflow and cause the system to overheat during use.
