12.5.3 Mobile Synchronization

how 2 safely sync data on telefonos 101 (yippie!!!)

Since mobile devices can't always stay connected to the Internet, many people and organizations use syncing methods to ensure that people have access to data that is up to date 99% of the time. Syncing methods store the latest data on mobile devices, workstations, and servers.

Syncing Methods

  • Tethered Synchronization (oldest)
    • Connect a data cable from the mobile device to a computer.
    • Use software that comes with the OS or third-party software to copy updated data to and from the PC and mobile device.
  • Automatic Synchronization (latest; most common)
    • Syncing happens automatically when the mobile device is connected to Wi-Fi or a mobile network.
  • Bluetooth Vehicle Syncing (dangerous; ridiculously common)
    • The fact that you can sync contacts and other things with the car (aka the car stores a copy of your contacts until you manually go in and delete it) means that other people can steal your contacts and other data

Syncing Software Platforms

  • Microsoft 365 (formerly known as Office 365)
  • Microsoft ActiveSync (no longer updated; still mostly supported)
  • iCloud
  • Google Drive
  • Dropbox

Common Synced Data

  • apps
  • email
  • pictures
  • music
  • videos
  • web bookmarks
  • documents
  • location tracking
  • social media data
  • E-books
  • saved passwords
