11.4.1 Network Device Services

Learn about the different services that are provided by network devices such as servers, routers, and switches.

Network management devices like servers, routers, and switches, can be configured to do certain tasks.

Server Roles

Servers can be configured to provide access to files, printers, websites, and security logs.

File Sharing

Configure file sharing using FTP or the newer Windows Server remote Web Access. It allows remote user to access, download, and upload files.

Printing

Configure the print server role to manage security settings, monitor usage, and provide access to printing from a remote location.

Web

Configure an internal website that might play a key role in enterprise operations (this is called an intranet) Microsoft web servers use Internet Information Services, while Linux web servers use Apache.

Logging

Make sure to always enable server security logs. This will help to see who you're dealing with, what they're doing, and to remedy issues as they come up.

DNS Servers
