3.11.3 Install an Expansion Card
Learn the steps to follow when installing an expansion card.
Use ESD Protection
Place the computer on an anti-static mat, ground the case to the mat, and ground yourself to the case and the mat. Good practice states that if a computer component isn't installed in a computer, then it should be in an anti-static bag.
Remove the Slot Cover
Find the bus type of the expansion card you're going to install, then find it's corresponding port. Remove the expansion slot cover by unscrewing the screw and sliding out the cover. Save the screw because you'll be using it to keep your (soon to be) installed expansion card securely in place. Also, don't throw out the cover. If you soon wish to uninstall the expansion card, you might want the cover to protect the empty slot from damage.
Install the Expansion Card
Line up the card with the slot (use the connection tab as a basis) and firmly press down on it until it's completely seated. Don't force the card into the slot, and don't rock it back and forth, and DEFINITELY don't bang it into place. All of these actions are dangerous and can damage both the slot and the card.
Secure the Expansion Card
Save the screw because you'll be using it to keep your (soon to be) installed expansion card securely in place. Also, don't throw out the cover. If you soon wish to uninstall the expansion card, you might want the cover to protect the empty slot from damage.
Remember that guy? Yeah, do that.
Configure Settings & Install Drivers
Turn on the computer. Make any config settings in the BIOS, and install any necessary drivers onto the OS. After that, the card is ready for use!
