1.1.10 Network & Server Cabinets

In enterprise and corporate settings, server infrastructure is often installed in network cabinets.

Network cabinets contain important equipment and hardware that enables the host company's cloud infrastructure to work smoothly and well.

Network cabinets are used to mount:

  • Routers
  • Patch Panels
  • Switches
  • and other types of networking accessories Server cabinets are used to mount:
  • Servers
  • Monitors
  • Power Supplies (usually in the form of a Uninterruptible Power Supply)

Network cabinets are often smaller and more compact than server cabinets, so they generate less heat than a larger server cabinet. Network cabinets are shallow, only measuring 31 inches deep or less.

Server cabinets are larger, often measuring 24 inches wide and 36 inches deep. They have perforated sides in order to promote airflow, protecting against overheating.

Mountable components have a height property defined as 1U, 2U, or 6U. That refers to Rack Units RU, or just U, and it measures 1.75 in or 44mm as defined by the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA). The standard width of rack mount equipment is about 19 inches, but some go up to or even past the 21 inches mark. When equipment isn't wide enough to fit into the cabinet, extension brackets to help fit the mountable component into place.

Although most mounted equipment are screwed into place, servers oftentimes have rails that slide in and out, enabling technicians to work on the servers without having to undo the screws. A: Router B: Network Switch C: Patch-Panel D: Fiber Patch Panel E: Server
