Twisted Pair Cable

A type of network cable that twists the wires in order to achieve better performance.

There are two types of twisted pair cables: shielded and unshielded. Shielded cables protects against interference, but requires the cable to be grounded.

Shielded cabling is usually referred to as STP, but there are different types of shielding:

  • screened (one thin outer foil around all pairs) - ScTP / F/UTP / FTP
  • fully shielded (braided outer screen, foil-shielded pair) - S/FTP / F-FTP
  • unshielded (has foil shielded pairs but not an outer shield) - U/FTP
