SMF Cables

A type of fiber optic cable that transfers data only using a single light ray, used for high transfer speeds over long cable distances.

Since the internal core in SMF cables are very small (~10 microns in diameter), there is little room for the light ray to bounce around, resulting in minimal data loss. It supports data rates up to 100 Gbps and cable lengths of several kilometers.

There are two grades of SMF cabling:

  • OS1 (indoor use)
  • OS2 (outdoor use)

SMF cables usually use laser diodes.
