Torrenting is decentralized file sharing. Now, downloading copyrighted content from a single, illegal source is illegal. Hinted at the "illegal" adjective. Very illegal. Please comply with your local copyright laws at all times. There are always legitimate uses for torrenting.

The way torrenting works is that, while having a single copyrighted file is illegal, having sets of bytes (1s and 0s) that may or may not add up to a maybe possibly copyrighted file technically isn't. Therefore, if people share these sets of bytes and not the file in it's entirety, you can go on a treasure hunt, collecting the pieces of the COMPLETELY LEGALLY ACQUIRED content you so desire from people that advertise that they have pieces of said file.

This is useful for downloading extremely large files, like .iso file for operating system images, and it decreases server loads.

Unfortunately, people use torrenting to share illegally acquired and/or copyrighted content. Sometimes. Please always obey the law. Big Brother is unfortunately (sometimes, maybe) watching.
