Band Steering
yes we need to shut down three lanes of traffic to fix this pothole
Many Wifi access points have dual-band or tri-band radios. Clients will use a combination of beacon messages from the access point and their signal strength to choose which band to use. However, what if we want to ensure that most clients end up on the 5 or 6 GHz and leave the 2.4 GHz bandwidth for the older devices that don't support Wifi 5 or Wifi 6?
We lower the amount of 2.4 GHz beacons we use. Or we could just use different network names (SSIDs) for the 2.4 GHz and the 5/6 GHz networks.
