Virtual LAN

aliases:

  • VLAN

A logical network segment configured on a managed network switch.

The switch can assign ports a vLAN ID, making a broadcast domain for the virtual LAN. Although two vLANs might be connected physically, they are isolated logically and must use a router to communicate.

vLANs are designed to split large groups of hosts into smaller ones to reduce excessive broadcast traffic. Each vLAN is its own broadcast domain. vLANs created by grouping ports under a broadcast domain.
