everyone knows the plug, but not everyone else

Star Topology is used most commonly in small LAN networks and SOHO networks due to it's simplicity, easy troubleshooting and easy configuration, since all necessary changes can be made at the switch or router. Anything that can go wrong can be pinpointed to one of the following:

• transmission media
• node (a.k.a. the nodes NIC)
• switch/router/wireless access point

The star topology is often called the hub-and-spoke topology when applied in the context of WAN networks.
