Enterprise Cabling

Unit: 2 Lesson: 3

big hub small hub organize by floors internet for all yippie!

Main Distribution Frame -> primary network hub for all the network cables in the building, providing internet access to the entire building (should be in a secure room)

Intermediate Distribution Frame -> smaller hub that connects to the MDF, usually used to organize extended connections by floor/building,

Patch-Panel -> organize individual node's connections to the network by connecting them to the patch panel, then to the switch

Cable Termination

To terminate a cable, untwist the ends of the wire pairs and place then in to the punchdown block in the correct order (T568A or T568B). Don't untwist the wires too much, especially Cat-6 wires. They require less than 1 cm of untwisting (whatever that means).

Fixed cables are terminated using punchdown tools, which fix wire conductors into an IDC. IDCs have several different formats (66, 110, BIX, Krone) that require different blades. Most punchdown tools have replaceable blades, though. They're double-sided blades; one side pushes the wire into the IDC terminal while the other cuts off the excess.

Some block tools enable the servicing technician to terminate a group of connectors in a single action.
